The Marangu Route, often referred to as the “Coca Cola Route,” is one of the most popular routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for being the cheapest and fastest way to reach Uhuru Peak, it is a common choice for trekkers, especially those looking for a budget-friendly option. This route can be completed in 5 days, but to improve your chances of summit success, we highly recommend opting for a 6-day trek instead, as this allows for better acclimatization.

One of the main advantages of the Marangu route is that hikers sleep in huts at each overnight stop, offering a higher level of comfort compared to camping. These huts come equipped with comfortable beds and mattresses, making it a more convenient option, especially for those who may be less accustomed to camping. Additionally, mineral water, beer, and chocolates are available for purchase at most sites along the route.

The Marangu route has a unique feature in that both the ascent and descent follow the same path, providing hikers with a simpler navigation experience. While this route offers a well-rounded experience, the trade-off is that it is typically more crowded compared to other routes. Nevertheless, it remains a popular choice for those looking to balance affordability, comfort, and a relatively quick climb to the summit.

Altitude: 1,800 m – 2,720 m
Hiking time: 4 hours

After breakfast at the hotel, depart at 8:00 a.m. for a 45-minute drive to Marangu Gate. Upon arrival, complete the necessary check-in procedures at the park gate. The hike will begin around 10:30 a.m. through the lush rainforest, heading toward Mandara Hut. The hike typically takes about 4 hours, with a stop halfway for a packed lunch.

Expect to reach Mandara Hut by 2:00 or 3:00 p.m., where you can unpack, rest, and enjoy a warm drink like tea or coffee. Dinner will be served in the early evening at around 7:00 p.m.

For those interested, a side trip to Maundi Crater (about 15 minutes away) offers stunning views of Kenya and Northern Tanzania. The hut facilities include bathrooms with running water for your comfort.

Altitude: 2,720 m – 3,720 m
Hiking time: 5-6 hours

Good morning! After a delicious breakfast, we'll begin our hike to Horombo Hut. We aim to leave camp around 8:30 a.m. for the 5 to 6-hour trek. Our path will take us through the beautiful lower-heath landscapes, where we'll pass small shrubs and gain some elevation.

We'll stop halfway for a lunch break and take in breathtaking views of Mawenzi, one of Kilimanjaro's stunning peaks. Upon arrival at Horombo Hut, we’ll be treated to incredible views of Kibo's summit, making for a perfect opportunity to rest and acclimatize.

Take some time to unpack and relax before enjoying a hearty dinner. The camp has bathrooms with running water for your convenience.

Altitude: 3,720 m – 4,720 m
Hiking time: 5 – 6 hours

Rise and shine for a nutritious breakfast to fuel our day. If you happen to wake up early, don’t miss the opportunity to capture stunning sunrise shots over the mountain!

Today, we’ll continue our ascent towards Kibo Hut. The first part of the trail takes us through the upper heathland, where we’ll be surrounded by alpine vegetation. As we continue, we’ll cross the expansive saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. This area is known for its lunar-like landscape, so be sure to stay alert and keep an eye out for any signs of altitude sickness.

We’ll hike for about 6 to 7 hours, stopping for a well-deserved lunch break along the way. Please note that Kibo Hut doesn’t have running water, so be prepared for that. Once we arrive, we’ll settle in and get some rest in preparation for our summit push the following day.

Altitude: 4,720 m – 5,895 m
Hiking time: 7 hours

Wake up at around midnight to a light breakfast, and prepare for the summit ascent. This part of the hike is carried out in the early morning before dawn so that the climbers reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise. Leave at about 1:00 a.m. and reach Gilman’s Point at about 7:00 a.m. The climbers are met with views of the crater from Gilman’s Point because it is on the Crater Rim.
Another 2 hours of hiking brings the climber to UhuruPeak at about 8:30 a.m. From there, you will descend back to Kibo Huts, collect your things, and cross the saddle again at Horombo Huts, where you will spend the night. Eat dinner and get some well-deserved sleep.

It’s time to wake up early, pack your things, and begin the descent back to Mandara Huts. After arriving at Mandara, enjoy a well-deserved lunch to recharge. From here, we continue our journey down to the Marangu Gate.

The descent will take about 3 – 4 hours, and you should reach the park gate around 2:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m.. Upon arrival, you will be met by your transport, which will take you back to Moshi. Once at your accommodation, enjoy a long overdue hot shower before dinner and your overnight rest.

This is also the time when summit certificates will be awarded. Those who reached Stella Point (5,759 m) will receive a green certificate, while those who successfully reached Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) will receive a gold certificate.

If you’ve had an incredible journey and are satisfied with the services, tips for the guides and porters are always appreciated, as they help recognize their hard work and commitment.

After 5 days of an unforgettable adventure on the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, it's time to say goodbye to this stunning land.

A transfer will bring you back to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward travel. Alternatively, if you're extending your journey, you can proceed to your next destination: a thrilling safari to explore Tanzania's wildlife or a relaxing stay in Zanzibar.

Whichever path you choose, the memories and experiences from Kilimanjaro will stay with you forever.
