The Umbwe Route is one of the shortest and most challenging routes on Mount Kilimanjaro, leading to the Southern Glaciers and the Western Breach. Its steep ascent and rapid elevation gain make acclimatization difficult, presenting a true climbing challenge.

This quiet and seldom-used path is ideal for trekkers seeking a more remote and rugged experience, away from the crowds found on more popular routes. The Umbwe Route is perfect for those looking to test their limits on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, with the reward of a truly unique adventure.

Elevation: 1600m to 2900m
Distance: 11km
Time: 6 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest

Upon arrival at the Umbwe Park Gate, we will complete the registration process before embarking on our trek. The narrow, winding path takes us through lush rainforest and alongside the Umbwe River. After a rewarding day of hiking, we will set up camp for the night at Umbwe Cave Camp, situated at an altitude of approximately 2,900m.

Elevation: 2940m to 3970m
Distance: 6km
Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest

After departing from camp, we will quickly exit the forest and witness the dramatic appearance of the Western Breach, which occasionally fades into the mist rolling up the Great Barranco. This is a stunning section of the trek, and tonight, we will camp at Barranco Camp, located at an altitude of 3,970m.

Elevation: 3950m to 3930m
Distance: 7km
Hiking Time: 4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

Today's adventure begins with a short yet exhilarating scramble to the top of the Great Barranco Wall. After reaching the summit, we will traverse over scree, making our way down to the Karanga Valley (3,930m), located beneath the stunning icefalls of the Heim, Kersten, and Decken Glaciers. Tonight, we will camp at Karanga Camp, nestled in the valley.

Elevation: 3930m to 4600m
Distance: 6km
Hiking Time: 3 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

After leaving Karanga Camp, we will head towards the junction that connects with the Mweka descent trail. From here, we continue the ascent to Barafu Hut (4,600m), where we will rest and prepare for the final push to the summit. This marks the completion of the Southern Circuit, offering spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s summit from various angles. As we settle at the camp, enjoy a hearty meal and rest, with the towering peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo visible in the distance.

Elevation: 4600m to 5895m (and down to 3100m)
Distance: 7km ascent / 23km descent
Time: 6–8 hours ascent / 7–8 hours descent
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit

The day begins at 23:30 with a quick tea and biscuits, after which we begin our challenging trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting between the Rebman and Ratzel glaciers, we ascend through the scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim. This section is the most mentally and physically demanding of the entire trek. Once we reach Stella Point (5732m), we will take a short rest and be treated to a breathtaking sunrise (weather permitting). Afterward, we push onward to Uhuru Peak (5895m), the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire African continent.

Though it can be freezing cold in the early hours, we will be met with warmth as we make our way back down. After enjoying the summit, we descend to Mweka Camp (3100m) via Barafu Hut for lunch. The descent involves loose gravel, so trekking poles will be helpful. Upon arrival at Mweka, we will enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and rest after this incredible achievement.

Elevation: 3100m to 1800m
Distance: 8 km
Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest

After breakfast, we begin our descent from Mweka Camp to the Mweka Park Gate, where climbers receive their summit certificates. The path at lower elevations can be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles will be helpful for traction and comfort. As the weather may be unpredictable, shorts and t-shirts are suitable for most of the descent, but keep your rain gear and warmer clothing handy in case of cooler weather or rain. This final stretch offers a chance to reflect on your incredible journey while descending through lush montane forest.
